Monhegan Island

Monhegan Island is 12 miles off the coast of southern Maine.  It is a very small place with a small population. However, in the summertime the it is visited by artists and nature lovers seeking unspoiled natural beauty.  The island does not disappoint.  As you look at it on the map and see it is only about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide, you think of getting around all over it very easily.

Think again.  Most of the island is uninhabited, steep, rough, and heavily treed and undergrowthed.  It will take you a long time to explore this island, despite its tiny size.  You will leave your car on the mainland and walk while visiting Monhegan.  Well worth the effort.
